Grizzl-E Classic Review

The no-app, rugged 40A value pick — why a fixed-amperage charger that just delivers power is the right call for most single-EV homes.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we rank

The Grizzl-E Classic is the charger for someone who wants reliable overnight charging and nothing else — no account, no app, no connectivity to drop. It’s a rugged, cast-aluminum 40A box that does one thing well, and for a single-EV home that’s often exactly the right amount of charger. It also tends to be the cheapest way to get a genuine, well-built 40A Level 2 unit.

Grizzl-E Classic

The value pick for someone who just wants reliable overnight charging with no app and no fuss. It's a rugged, cast-aluminum 40A box that does one thing well — and the cold-weather cable is a genuine differentiator in a northern garage.

Strengths

  • 40A / 9.6 kW is more than enough to add a full day's range overnight
  • Rugged cast-aluminum housing, NEMA 4 outdoor rating
  • No account, no app, no connectivity to fail — it just charges

Trade-offs

  • No scheduling or energy monitoring (by design)
  • The default cable is stiff; the cold-weather variant is worth it up north
ConnectorJ1772
Max output40 A
Max power9.6 kW
Cable length24 ft
InstallPlug-in (NEMA 14-50) or hardwired
Outdoor ratingNEMA 4 (outdoor)
Warranty3 years

Spec note. Ships set for a NEMA 14-50 plug on a 40A circuit. Hardwiring is supported but doesn't raise the 40A ceiling — this is a fixed-40A unit, which is the right amount for the vast majority of overnight charging.

Who it’s for

The Grizzl-E suits the set-and-forget owner. If you plug in at night and want a full battery by morning, a 40A charger delivers roughly 30 miles of range per hour — more than 300 miles overnight — and this one does it without asking you to create an account or connect to Wi-Fi. For most people who charge one car at home, that’s the whole job, and paying extra for an app you won’t open is money that could go toward a proper industrial outlet instead.

Build and cold-weather cable

The cast-aluminum housing and NEMA 4 outdoor rating are the standout here: this is a charger built to live on an exterior wall and take weather. The one spec worth paying attention to is the cable — the standard cable is stiff, and if you’re in a cold climate the cold-weather cable variant is worth seeking out, because a cable that stays flexible below freezing is a genuine daily quality-of-life difference in a northern garage.

The trade-off: no smarts

There’s no scheduling and no energy monitoring, by design. If your utility has cheap overnight rates and you want the charger to start automatically at 2am, you either need a car that can schedule charging itself (most can) or a charger with an app — the Grizzl-E won’t do it for you. That’s the one reason to step up to the Emporia or ChargePoint Home Flex, both of which schedule in the app.

Amperage: fixed at 40A

Unlike the adjustable ChargePoint, the Grizzl-E is a fixed 40A unit — hardwiring it doesn’t raise that ceiling. For most drivers that’s the right amount and simplifies the install (a 40A charger needs a 50A circuit). If you specifically want 48A for faster charging and have a 60A circuit, this isn’t the charger; the Emporia is.

Verdict

The Grizzl-E Classic is the honest value pick: rugged, weatherproof, and focused on the one thing a home charger has to do. Buy it if you want a reliable 40A charger with no software in the way, get the cold-weather cable if you live somewhere cold, and put the money you saved toward a good outlet.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Grizzl-E Classic have an app?

No — and that's the point. It has no Wi-Fi, no account and no scheduling. It just delivers power reliably. If you want to schedule charging for cheap overnight rates, use your car's built-in scheduling or choose a charger with an app like the Emporia or ChargePoint Home Flex.

Is 40 amps enough?

For the vast majority of single-EV homes, yes. 40A adds about 30 miles of range per hour — over 300 miles in a typical overnight charge. You'd only need more if you drive very high mileage or have very little time to charge, in which case a 48A charger on a 60A circuit is the step up.

Can I install the Grizzl-E outdoors?

Yes — it's rated NEMA 4 and the cast-aluminum housing is built for it. As with any charger, the circuit and any outlet must be installed by a licensed electrician to code, and an outdoor plug-in install should use a protected, industrial-grade receptacle.

Should I get the cold-weather cable?

If you live somewhere that gets cold, yes. The standard cable is stiff, and a cable that stays flexible below freezing makes plugging in every night meaningfully easier through winter. It's a small upcharge for a daily quality-of-life improvement.
