Emporia vs ChargePoint Home Flex
Two 48A-class chargers at very different prices — amperage flexibility, enclosure rating, install path and app maturity, side by side.
These two get cross-shopped constantly, and for once the comparison is genuinely close. Both are smart Level 2 chargers that reach the top of residential amperage. Both are sold in plug-in and hardwired versions. Both have apps that schedule to off-peak rates. The difference comes down to two things: how far down the amperage range goes, and how much you are willing to pay for a longer software track record.
The short answer: the Emporia is the better value and has the stronger enclosure rating, and for most buyers it is the one to get. The ChargePoint Home Flexearns its premium in exactly one situation — when you do not yet know what circuit you will get, because it configures all the way down to 16A.

Amperage: the real difference
Both units top out in the same place for practical purposes — the Emporia at 48A hardwired, the ChargePoint at 50A. That gap is negligible; two amps is about two miles of range per hour and neither is achievable unless your panel supports a 60A circuit and your car’s onboard charger can accept it.
The meaningful difference is at the bottom. The ChargePoint Home Flex configures from 16A upward, which means it can live on a small circuit — a 20A or 30A branch in an old house, a shared panel in a condo, a temporary arrangement while you save for a proper run. The Emporia does not go that low. If there is real uncertainty about what circuit you will end up with, that flexibility is worth paying for, because a charger that cannot be configured down to your circuit is a charger you cannot use.
The install path
The Emporia has the cleaner story here. It ships preconfigured for a NEMA 14-50 plug at 40A and converts to hardwired 48A later, which lets you start on the cheaper install and upgrade only if it proves necessary. ChargePoint sells the hardwired and plug-in Home Flex as separate models, so that choice is made at purchase instead. Either way, remember that a plug caps you at 40A — a NEMA 14-50 is a 50A receptacle and the 80% continuous-load rule brings that to 40A. Anything above requires hardwiring. Enclosure: Emporia wins
The Emporia publishes NEMA 4; the ChargePoint publishes NEMA 3R. That is not marketing noise. NEMA 3R protects against falling rain, sleet and snow — fine under an eave. NEMA 4 adds windblown dust and splashing or hose-directed water, which is what you want on a wall that takes driving rain or sits where you wash the car. The apps
ChargePoint’s is the most mature in the category, with the longest track record and integration with its public charging network — genuinely useful if you use ChargePoint stations away from home, since it is one account for both. Emporia’s app comes from a home energy monitoring company, so the energy data side is the more coherent half.
For the feature that actually saves money — scheduling a charge into off-peak hours — both do the job, and so does your car if it is reasonably modern. Which should you buy?
Buy the Emporia if you know roughly what circuit you are getting (40A plug-in or 48A hardwired), if the charger is going somewhere exposed, or if value is the priority. That covers most people.
Buy the ChargePoint Home Flexif your circuit is genuinely uncertain or likely to be small, if you want the option to reconfigure across a wide range as your situation changes, or if you already use ChargePoint’s public network and want one app for everything.

Is the ChargePoint Home Flex worth the extra money over the Emporia?
Only if you need its wider amperage range. The Home Flex configures from 16A to 50A, which matters when your circuit is uncertain or small. If you know you are getting a standard 40A or 48A circuit, the Emporia does the same job for less and has a better enclosure rating.
Which is better for outdoor installation?

Can both be installed plug-in and hardwired?

Not for basic charging. The apps add scheduling and monitoring; scheduling is the feature worth having if your utility charges time-of-use rates, but most modern EVs schedule from the car's own screen for free.
Which is faster?
Neither, in practice. The ChargePoint's 50A ceiling versus the Emporia's 48A is about two miles of range per hour, and both are limited by your circuit and by your car's onboard AC charger — which on many EVs caps below either figure.
