Spec note. The listing publishes 40A, 9.6 kW, 240V, a NEMA 14-50 plug, a J1772 connector and a 25 ft cable. It does not name a certification body, an enclosure rating or a warranty term, so those read as not published. A 40A unit needs a 50A circuit behind the outlet under the 80% rule.

Why 40A is the number that matters

Charging power is amps × 240 ÷ 1000. At 40A that is roughly 9.6 kW, which replaces around 300 miles of range across a ten-hour night for a typical EV. For nearly every driver, that is “full by morning” with room to spare.

It is also the amperage that fits on the cheapest good install. Under the 80% continuous-load rule a 40A charger needs a 50A circuit — the same class of branch an electric range or an RV outlet uses, a commodity job in most houses. The next step up, 48A, needs a 60A circuit, and that is where panels start running out of room and a service upgrade enters the conversation. One ceiling above it, as always: your car’s onboard AC charger rating. If yours caps below 9.6 kW, this unit will simply run at whatever the car accepts. Look the figure up in your owner’s manual — it costs two minutes and stops you overbuying on your next charger.

The certification question

Here is the line we would want to see and did not. The listing we read does not name a certification body— no UL, no ETL.

That is not proof the unit is uncertified. Marketplace listings routinely omit things the packaging states, and this is a category where listing quality varies enormously between sellers of otherwise identical hardware. But it does mean the burden of checking falls on you.

Before ordering:look at the listing page and the product photographs for a UL or ETL mark on the housing. If it is there, this is a lot of charger for the money. If it is not, buy something else — a device carrying 40A continuously for hours, unattended, while you sleep, is not the place to accept an unknown. What else is not published

No enclosure rating and no warranty term. The spec table prints “Not published” for both.

On a portable, the enclosure gap is worth respecting because portable charging happens outdoors more than home charging does. Without a published rating, keep the control box out of standing water and off wet ground during a session — elevate it or hang it. Do not leave it out in the rain for hours on the assumption that it is sealed.

On the warranty, treat the retailer’s return window as your practical recourse, and note that TLE LEVEL is an unfamiliar brand with no established support history. That is the trade you are making for the price, and it is a legitimate one to make consciously.

The 25 ft cable is the reason to prefer it

Cable length is the specification budget chargers quietly shorten, and it is the one you cannot engineer around afterwards. Twenty-five feet is generous at this price and it matters twice over on a portable:

  • At home,it means the outlet does not have to be adjacent to the charge port. Measure from where the outlet will be to the port as the car actually parks — and if you sometimes reverse in and sometimes nose in, use the longer of the two, plus slack.
  • Away, it is frequently the difference between charging and not. The outlet at a rental is inside a garage, behind a workbench, or on a post ten feet from where you are permitted to park.

Using it as your home charger

Entirely legitimate, and a good way to spend less. Three things to get right:

  1. Buy a proper receptacle.This is not optional. Inexpensive NEMA 14-50 outlets are built for cyclic loads like ranges, not the continuous draw of EV charging, and they are a known overheating and melting risk.   2. Get the circuit installed by an electrician. A 50A 240V branch is licensed work. The charger is plug-and-play; the outlet is not.
  3. Mount it properly. A portable hung from a nail is how cables get damaged and connectors end up on the floor. A holster for the connector and a hook or dock for the cable cost very little and add years to the hardware.

How it compares
