EV Charger Not Working? Work Through This
A methodical fault-finding order for a home charger that won't start, keeps stopping, or has slowed down — and the symptoms that mean stop and call an electrician.
Most home charging faults are not broken chargers. They are settings, seating and breakers — and working through them in a sensible order usually finds the problem in a few minutes without anyone being called out.
One thing before you start. If at any point you find something hot rather than warm, see scorching, discoloration or melted plastic, or smell burning, stop immediately and skip to the last section. Those are not troubleshooting steps, they are stop-now signs.
Nothing happens at all
1. Check for a schedule you forgot about
This is the most common cause by a wide margin, and it is embarrassing precisely because it is so easy. Charging schedules can be set in three separate places— the car, the charger’s app, and sometimes a utility program — and any one of them can be quietly holding the session until an off-peak window.
Check the car’s screen first, then the charger app. If you recently changed electricity tariffs or the clocks went back, a schedule that used to work may now be pointing at the wrong hours.
2. Check the charge limit
If the car is already at its set limit — commonly 80% for daily use — it will not start a session. It is behaving correctly; there is nothing to do.
3. Reseat the connector
Unplug it fully and plug it back in with a firm push until it latches. A connector that is nearly seated makes enough contact to look plugged in and not enough to start a session. While it is out, look at the pins in both the connector and the charge port — grit, dust or corrosion on a contact is a real and common fault, particularly if the cable has been living on the garage floor.
4. Check the breaker — and the GFCI
Look at the breaker in your panel. A tripped breaker sometimes sits in a middle position rather than fully off; switch it fully off, then back on.
If the circuit has a GFCI, check that too. And note the distinction that matters: a breaker that trips once may be a nuisance trip. A breaker or GFCI that trips repeatedly or every session is telling you something real about the circuit and needs an electrician rather than another reset.
5. Power-cycle a smart charger
If the unit is connected and app-controlled, switch its breaker off for thirty seconds and back on. Smart chargers can end up in a state where they have lost the network, are mid-firmware-update, or are waiting on an account authorization. Check whether the app shows the charger online at all — if it does not, the problem is connectivity rather than power.
It starts, then stops
Intermittent interruption almost always means a connection problem, and it deserves more attention than a charger that simply does nothing, because the underlying cause is often a resistance point that generates heat.
The connector and port. Contaminated or worn contacts make and break as the cable moves or as temperature changes. Inspect and clean gently with the power off.
The receptacle, on a plug-in install.This is the most common hardware fault in home charging. A NEMA 14-50 receptacle that was not built for continuous load loosens with heat cycling, and a loose contact under 40A gets hot. Feel the outlet after a session — warm is expected, hot is not. Cable movement.If the session drops when the cable is disturbed, the fault is mechanical — a connection somewhere in that path is marginal.
Temperature protection. Chargers reduce output or stop when they get too hot. In direct summer sun on an unshaded wall this can be normal self-protection rather than a fault.
It works, but it is slower than it was
Cold weather
The most common answer in winter, and it is not a fault. A cold battery accepts less current, and some of the energy goes into warming the pack rather than filling it. Miles gained per hour genuinely drop. Preconditioning the car while still plugged in helps, because that energy comes from the wall.
An amperage setting that changed
On adjustable chargers, check the configured amperage in the app. Firmware updates and app changes have been known to reset units to a conservative default, and a charger quietly running at 24A instead of 40A looks like a slow charger rather than a settings problem.
Check the car too — many EVs have their own charge-current setting, sometimes remembered per location, and it may have been reduced at some point.
The normal end-of-charge slowdown
Charging naturally slows as the battery approaches full. On AC charging this is far less pronounced than the DC taper, but it exists. Our AC vs DC charging guide explains the mechanism.
The car may be the limit, not the charger
Worth restating, because people upgrade the wrong thing: speed is set by the lowest of the circuit, the charger and the car’s onboard AC charger. If your car accepts 32A, a 48A charger delivers 32A and always did. Our amps and circuits guide covers the arithmetic.
Is it the charger or the car?
One test settles it. Charge your car somewhere else — a public station or a friend’s charger — and if it works, the car is fine. Have another EV try your charger, and if that works, the charger is fine.
That single swap saves an enormous amount of guessing and tells you which support line to call. Have your charger’s model and serial number to hand, and note any error code the unit or app displays, since manufacturers map those to specific faults.
Stop and call an electrician if you see any of this
These are not troubleshooting steps. Stop using the circuit and get it inspected.
Anything hot. A receptacle, plug or connector that is hot rather than warm. Warm is normal; hot means a resistance problem generating heat.
Any scorching, discoloration or melted plasticon a receptacle, plug or connector — even slight browning around the pins.
A burning or hot-plastic smell anywhere near the charger, outlet or panel.
Repeated breaker or GFCI trips. One trip can be a nuisance. Every session is a fault, and resetting it repeatedly is bypassing a safety device that is doing its job.
A receptacle that feels loose when you insert the plug, or a plug that no longer grips.
These are the early stages of the failure mode that damages property, and they are overwhelmingly associated with under-specified receptacles and connections that have loosened over time. If your install used a standard hardware-store outlet, replacing it with an industrial-grade one is the correct fix — not resetting the breaker again. Preventing most of this
Three habits cover the majority of faults. Keep the connector off the floor with a hook or holster, so grit never reaches the pins. Use an industrial-grade receptacle if you are plugging in. And check the outlet temperatureoccasionally after a long session — a ten-second habit that catches the one failure mode that actually matters.

Why has my EV charger stopped working?
The most common causes, in rough order: a scheduled charging setting in the car or app that you forgot about, a tripped breaker or GFCI, a connector that is not fully seated, a charge limit already reached, or a Wi-Fi or account problem on a smart charger. Work through them in that order before assuming hardware failure.
Why does my EV charge slower than it used to?
Most often cold weather, which reduces both charging efficiency and how much current the battery will accept, or a charger that has been reconfigured to a lower amperage after an app or firmware update. Also check whether the car's own charge-current setting has changed, and remember that charging naturally slows as the battery approaches its limit.
Why does my charging session keep stopping?
Intermittent interruption usually points to a connection problem — a connector not fully seated, a worn or contaminated contact, or a loose receptacle on a plug-in install. It can also be a GFCI tripping intermittently, which is a genuine warning sign rather than a nuisance. A loose or hot connection needs attention, not repeated retries.
Is it the charger or the car?
Test each independently. If another EV charges fine from your charger, the charger is good. If your car charges fine at a public station or on a different unit, the car is good. That single swap resolves most ambiguity and tells you who to call.
