Tethered vs Untethered EV Chargers
Attached cable or socket-only — a decision that barely exists in North America, and why the question you probably meant to ask is a different one.
If you have been reading British or European EV advice, you will have run into this question framed as a major decision. In North America it mostly is not one — and knowing why saves you from shopping for a product category that barely exists here.
A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached, with a connector on the end ready to plug into your car. An untethered charger — also called socket-only — is a box with a socket in it, and you supply a separate cable with a connector at each end.
Essentially every home charger sold in North America is tethered. That is not an accident, and the reason explains the whole topic.
Why untethered exists in Europe and not here
Untethered charging solves a standards problem. In parts of Europe, multiple AC connector types coexisted on cars sold in the same market, and public charging posts are commonly socket-based — you carry your own cable and plug it in at both ends. In that world, a socket-only home unit makes sense: it charges whatever turns up on your driveway, and you already own a cable because you need it in public anyway.
North America went a different way. AC charging standardized on the J1772 connector, so every non-Tesla EV took the same plug and Teslas came with an adapter in the box. There was never a meaningful compatibility problem for a tethered home charger to solve, and public AC stations here have attached cables too. The result is that the flexibility of an untethered unit buys almost nothing, while the inconvenience — fetching a cable, connecting it at both ends, storing it somewhere — is entirely real. The honest case for untethered
Two arguments hold up, and it is worth knowing them even though the product selection here is thin.
Future-proofing. If connector standards change, a socket-only unit adapts by buying a new cable rather than a new charger. With the industry moving from J1772 to NACS, that is not a hypothetical.
Tidiness and theft. No cable hanging on the wall when not in use, and nothing outside for anyone to cut and take. On a street-facing installation that is a genuine consideration.
Why they still lose
The future-proofing argument turns out weaker than it sounds, because the NACS transition is being handled with cheap adapters. A tethered J1772 charger plus a $40 J1772-to-Tesla adapter costs far less than a socket-only charger plus a full NACS cable, and it works today. Cables with connectors on both ends are expensive precisely because they are two connectors and a heavy conductor.
And the daily convenience gap is larger than people expect. Plugging in a tethered charger is one motion. With untethered it is: open the trunk, get the cable, connect to the wall, connect to the car, and reverse all of it in the morning — in the rain, in the dark, every day.
The question you probably meant to ask
In practice, three decisions matter far more for a North American buyer, and they are where the shopping effort should go.
1. Cable length
This is the untethered question in disguise, because a tethered charger’s cable length is fixed at purchase and it is the most common regret in the category. Measure the actual path — down the wall, across the floor, around the car to the port — not the straight-line distance. Charge ports sit in different places on different vehicles, and if you might change cars, plan for the awkward one.
Around 25 ft is a comfortable default. Too short is genuinely hard to fix; a rated extension is possible but adds a connection and cost. Too long is only untidy, and a cable hook solves that for a few dollars.
2. Plug-in or hardwired
This is the real flexibility decision in North America. A charger on a NEMA 14-50 plug can be unplugged and taken with you when you move; a hardwired one cannot, but it can exceed 40A and removes the receptacle as a failure point. Our plug-in vs hardwired guide covers it properly.
3. Amperage matched to your panel

Living with a tethered charger
Two habits make the attached cable last, and both matter because on most tethered units the cable is not an owner-replaceable part — it enters through a sealed gland and damage can mean replacing the charger.
Hang it, do not coil it on the floor. A cable on concrete collects grit that works into the connector pins, gets driven over and sits in salty winter water.
Never wrap it around the charger itself.That puts repeated strain exactly where the cable enters the unit — the one point you cannot repair. Use a hook mounted beside the charger instead.
Do both and a tethered cable will comfortably outlast several cars, which is ultimately why the format won here.

Can I replace the cable on a tethered charger?
Usually not as an owner-serviceable part — the cable enters through a sealed gland and is treated as part of the unit. This is the practical downside of tethered: cable damage can mean replacing the charger. It is also why you should never wrap the cable around the unit itself, which strains exactly that entry point.
